The End of an Era: Gulfstream G150

The End of an Era: Gulfstream G150

At the beginning of 2017, Gulfstream announced the end of the Gulfstream G150, its mid-size aircraft. The G150 was the upgraded model to the Astra/Astra SPX and G100. Famous for its (relatively) operations-friendly maintenance schedule, long range and fuel efficiency, the Astra/SPX/G100/G150 line has existed for 25 years. Gulfstream gave no official reason for stopping production, but the assumption that slow sales were the culprit has to be made. Overall, the market in the long range mid-size segment has become increasingly competitive with the Legacy 450 and Citation Latitude recently coming to market and providing similar range with a much larger cabin and similar price point. Faced with a choice of a significant redesign or significant price competition, Gulfstream has selected to close the production line. They will focus their resources on the larger cabin aircraft, with Gulfstream’s smallest aircraft now the G280, a 9+ passenger cabin with transatlantic range. The last G150 off the line recently ferried its way through London to Dallas, where it will be outfitted and delivered to its owner. The aircraft type will still exist for decades to come and will still be a sight at airports around the world for many years in the future.
